What is an Idaho Bonded Title?

An Idaho Bonded Title (also known as an Idaho Certificate of Title, Idaho Lost Title Bond, or Idaho Defective Title Bond) is a document that proves you own your vehicle. An Idaho Bonded Title looks just like a regular title except it is marked ‘bonded.’

The purpose of an ID Bonded Title is to protect any previous owners of the vehicle and the state of Idaho.

When you get a bonded title, you are promising that you are the true owner of the vehicle. If someone comes forward later on and says that they are the owner of the vehicle and that you should not have been granted a bonded title, they can make a claim on your bond. If the claim is determined to be valid, the surety company would pay the person a fair amount. It would then be your responsibility to repay the surety.

How to get an Idaho Bonded Title

Step #1: Contact DMV to make sure you are eligible

Your local DMV is the only entity that can tell you if you are eligible for a bonded title or not.

Contact your local DMV, explain your situation, and ask if you could get a bonded title.

If they say yes, move on to Step #2.

Step #2: Provide documentation

Even though you do not have proper documentation, you still have to provide sufficient documentation to show the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) that you are the owner of your vehicle.

Valid proof could be an Idaho Bill of Sale or proof of purchase.

Step #3: Conditional Title Statement of Facts

You must provide an explanation for why you do not have a valid Certificate of Title or Ownership.

Complete a Conditional Statement of Facts to the best of your ability.

Step #4: Vehicle Inspection

You must get your vehicle inspected by a representative designated by the Idaho Department of Transportation.

Call them at (208) 334-8000.

Step #5: Vehicle Appraisal

You must get your vehicle appraised by either a  licensed Idaho auto dealer or a Motor Vehicle Investigator. The appraisal must reflect the current value of the vehicle.

Step #6: Purchase Idaho Lost Title Bond

Purchase a bond from a surety bond company. Make sure you apply for the correct bond amount.

Purchase an Idaho Lost Title Bond in the amount of 1.5 the value of the vehicle. For example, if your vehicle is appraised at $2,000 then you must secure a $3,000 ID Lost Title Bond.

If your ID Lost Title Bond is less than $6,600 then you’ll only need to pay $100 for your bond. Want to know what you’d pay for your Idaho Lost Title Bond? Visit our Lost Title Bond Resource page
